Daredevil is … Batman?

He may not be directing the Justice League movie, but he will be a member. Warner Bros. announced today that the award winning actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter, Ben Affleck will be playing Batman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel 2.

According to the press release:

Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman.  He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.  I [Snyder] can’t wait to work with him.

This newest version of Batman will not be connected to Nolan’s Batman. Which creates the question: “What type of Batman will Afflect play?”  In the Nolan’s, Batman was a man on a mission but affected by his emotions. Not at all the cold and calculating detective. Can Affleck pull off the character of Batman? Is he going to do Bale’s voice? It will be interesting to see how Batman will fair against the Man of Steel.

So basically… Batman dies in the opening scene of Man of Steel 2? That’s what I’m gathering here.

This is a mistake. Not because Ben Affleck is bad, but because he’s too big to play such a well-known character. Seems like DC/Warner is shooting for their own Iron Man effect; find a megastar who can reinvent himself and breathe new life into one of their centerpieces. They should go the complete opposite direction, though; take a nobody and mold him into your flagship character, a la Hugh Jackman and Wolverine.
