Up For Discussion: PS4 and 720 Rumors

With the hype machine kicking up the chatter on the newest PlayStation and XBOX editions [whatever they'll be called], we can’t help but wonder: Which of the rumors will stick? Will we have one-time use discs? Will we need to run a constant network feed into them to play? Will they be download only?

With so much to think about and so many reviewers giving their 2-cents, we thought it about time to hear from our readers: What do you expect to see in the next-gen consoles?

Note: You’ll have noticed that we don’t report on rumor. In fact, we really don’t like rumors and think they just cause for muddled news feeds. But, we know they’re more than likely to see new PlayStation’s and Xbox’s release this year and some of these rumors are valid [see PlayStation Vs. Used Games]. The pictures were added for hilarity purposes. Please don’t reference them. Thank you.

  1. I expect this upcoming generation to rely heavily on a more digital experience. The next generation will be best experienced ‘always on’ with an extensive digital download marketplace that will offer both retail and arcade games on day one. They’ll also focus heavily on digital movies (and rentals), streaming TV (they already do, but I could see them pitching their consoles as Roku alternatives) and music. In other words the next generation consoles will be less about gaming and more about entertainment. I’m okay with this. I use my Xbox more for Netflix and Hulu more and more often and to play games less and less.

  2. Very much. The next-generation will surely make us more reliant on online features, but I don’t think as much as people anticipate. I also don’t think we’ll experience a full download generation just yet [Sony already tested the market and failed miserably. i.e. Go]. They can’t go 100% online yet. You’d be surprised how many people own consoles and don’t have internet in their homes.

Every electronics company wants to make your home branded with their wares. Apple, Sony, Microsoft – all companies trying and succeeding. The gaming market is just another way for them to pull consumers in and not let go.

  3. I am only interested in the ps4, as I am a sony user and don’t get into the xbox too much. I think the ps4 will use lots of familiar elements to the ps3 such as the controllers and psn, and basically just provide a hardware uprgrade. My wishlist includes backwards compatibility, and a better internet browser, as well as keyboard and mouse functionality (just because it would be fun to see more MMO’s that worked on console). I think a lot of the gimmicky stuff over the last few years will faze out, like the “six axis” element of the controller, as well as the playstation eye, which, lets face it, is a useless piece of gaming hardware IMO

  4. Oh wow … It’s so great to see a ‘next gen’ discussion without all the fan boi drama!!!
I’m like Joseph, I’m a ps3 guys as well. I do have a 360 just never play it much. (wanna buy an Xbox?) Joseph brings up a great point. I can’t wait until the console market decides to get serious and make proper use of the keyboard and mouse. I love gaming on the PlayStation but I’m not very good in FPS on a controller. I resort to my PC for those.
If rumors are true and the next gens are to become serious contenders in the “media/entertainment systems” they need to make the systems remote friendly. I’m not a fan of using a gaming controller to control media functions.

  5. I think they’ll only start paying attention to PC gamers desire for a keyboard and mouse when the Valve system launches. That’s the system I’m concerned will change the market and, as much as I love Valve, not for the good. [ex: Madden now that there isn't a competitor.]
